Sustainable Transport: Electric Cars

Location Turin, Italy
Responsible organization FIAT Auto - VAMIA Platform.
Description Experimental urban use of FIAT Panda with an interchange car park for the conventional cars, at the public's disposal. The project implied the design, construction and administration of battery recharging systems, agreements with local authorities, monitoring of the results.
Issues addressed Sustainable transport
Objectives
  • To verify the public's attitude and concrete use conditions of the electric cars in town centres;
  • To increase the public authorities' awareness regarding the use of electric cars at the service of consumers in town.
Results achieved 140,000 km covered in 8 months; information gathered about public's motivation and opinions, and the performance of the cars in everyday use.
Lessons learned The electric car, although far from being widespread, can contribute to the improvement of quality of life in the city.
