Austria: Support to NEPAD

Support to African Countries since NEPAD was adopted in 2001

 

Target of 0,7% of GNP to ODA

It is a long-term goal of Austria to reach this percentage. In the medium-term, Austria, like all other EU-Member States, will reach until 2006 a percentage of 0.33% GNP/ODA following the Monterrey-Consensus.

 

HIPC

Already since 1997, Austria has been very active in this area, and granted some € 37 Mio. every year on debt relief initiatives until 2000. From 2000 on, when Austria started to forgive debts, this sum rose to € 151 Mio. in the year 2001 and € 63 Mio. in the year 2002.

 

Essential role of trade

Is acknowledged and gets fostered whenever possible.

 

Duty-free and quota-free access for exports of LDC by 2010

This competence falls under the legislature of the European Union. In accordance with the EBA initiative of the EU Austria grants duty- and quota-free access for exports of LDCs since March 2002, with the exception of bananas, rice and sugar.

 

Encouraging investment by the private sector and the transfer of technology to African countries

Austria is one of the forerunners and main donors of Cleaner Production Centres in co-operation with UNIDO. This program aims at enhancing investments for transfer and development of environmentally sound technologies.

 

Financial resources for NEPAD’s priorities

As NEPAD’s priorities are more or less equal to Austria’s priorities, nearly all-Austrian development assistance is spent in these fields.

 

South-South co-operation

Has been a cornerstone in the Austrian development co-operation program for several years.

Austria has financed programs and projects in all areas mentioned, albeit none within the framework of NEPAD.
