Negotiating Change: Enhancing cooperation and building resilience

The United Nations Ombudsman and Mediation Services (UNOMS) in conjunction with the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP) presents a thematic week entitled: ‘Negotiating Change: Enhancing cooperation and building resilience’ to be held 8-12 June, 2015 on the ESCAP premises.

Negotiating Change: Enhancing cooperation and building resilience

Change is inevitable. Advancing economic and social change requires consensus-building between multiple groups of stakeholders and constituencies—a tenuous balancing act. Likewise, within organizations, new systems and processes, diminishing resources, and organizational restructuring create their own challenges.  Resilient institutions must be adept at navigating change and staff and managers need to be well equipped to understand and evolve in a changing work environment.  Yet, the process can be both difficult and frustrating.

This week-long series will focus on the theme of negotiation and cooperation in a changing work environment, relevant to the achievement of the ESCAP mandate, and which can be applied in all areas of professional or personal life.  The series will consist of an expert panel presentation and short skill-building workshops.

Being happy in the modern work environment greatly depends on our ability to understand and effectively manage emotions, in others and ourselves. The knowledge, skills, and abilities we now know of as Emotional Intelligence influence every aspect of our working lives. This workshop combines theory and enjoyable exercises to help develop an appreciation of how important emotions are in the workplace. All of us experience moments in our lives when unwanted emotions become exaggerated and that is normal. It is how we handle them that can lead to problems in the workplace and at home. This program will teach you a process for developing emotional self-control and turning intense emotions into positive energy.

In the workplace, we regularly engage in some type of difficult conversation, whether it is with our peers in a team, a supervisor or a supervisee.  This workshop will focus on how we can better prepare for and manage difficult conversations with various stakeholders. Participants will learn practical tips and strategies for handling difficult conversations.

In a changing workplace, feedback done in the appropriate way, with the right intentions, is the avenue to performance greatness, and therefore a skill set worth developing. The UN recognizes that its most valuable asset is the people who work here. We all need to know what we are doing well, and not so well. We benefit from understanding the thoughts of others, and hearing suggestions on ways to improve. This workshop has been developed to provide an overview of frameworks and practical techniques that promote the interchange of positive and constructive feedback. Using realistic scenarios and through this fun interactive workshop, you will take away practical skills to use whenever the next evaluation or feedback opportunity presents itself.
