In a letter dated 6 July 2017 (A/72/141), the Permanent Representative of China to the United Nations requested the inclusion of this item in the provisional agenda of the seventy-second session.

Consideration at the seventy-second session

The Sixth Committee considered the item at its 11th and 15th meetings, on 9 and 13 October 2017.

Statements were made by the representatives of China, Togo, Viet Nam, Sri Lanka, Cuba, the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, Timor-Leste, Bangladesh, Nepal, Peru and Ecuador.

Delegations expressed support for granting observer status to the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan.

Action taken by the Sixth Committee

At the 11th meeting, on 9 October, the representative of China, on behalf of Bangladesh, Cambodia, Colombia, Cuba, Ecuador, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Kenya, Lao People’s Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Nepal, the Netherlands, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, the Russian Federation, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Timor-Leste, Togo, Venezuela (Bolivarian Republic of) and Viet Nam, introduced a draft resolution entitled “Observer status for the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan in the General Assembly” (A/C.6/72/L.8) and announced that Brazil, the Philippines and Eritrea had joined as sponsors of the draft resolution. Subsequently, Malaysia, Panama and Portugal joined in sponsoring the draft resolution.

At its 15th meeting, on 13 October, the Committee adopted draft resolution A/C.6/72/L.8 without a vote.

Under this draft resolution, the General Assembly would decide to invite the International Network for Bamboo and Rattan to participate in the sessions and the work of the General Assembly in the capacity of observer; and request the Secretary-General to take the necessary action to implement the resolution.
