74th Session: Tijjani Muhammad-Bande

Tijjani Muhammad-Bande was elected President of the 74th session of the General Assembly of the United Nations on 4 June 2019. Professor and diplomat, he was the Permanent Representative of Nigeria to the United Nations.
Mr. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande presided the 74th session of the General Assembly from 17 September 2019 to 14 September 2020.
Also on 4 June 2019, the General Assembly elected 20 Vice-Presidents for the 74th session:
- from the African States: Cabo Verde, Congo, Ethiopia, Tunisia and Zimbabwe;
- from the Asian-Pacific States: Indonesia, Oman, Papua New Guinea, Singapore and Uzbekistan;
- from the Eastern European States: Croatia;
- from the Latin American and Caribbean States: Argentina and Trinidad and Tobago;
- from the Western European and Other States: Malta and Turkey;
- the five permanent members of the Security Council: China, France, the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the United States of America.
Priorities
H.E. Mr. Tijjani Muhammad-Bande’s goal, as President of the 74th session of the General Assembly, was to reduce the trust deficit between nations. His priorities for his presidency were as follows:
Peace and Security
- Promoting international peace and security, in particular on conflict prevention
Climate Change
- Strengthening global action on climate change as an integral part of the effective implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals
Human Rights
- Accentuating inclusivity, human rights and the empowerment of youth and women
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
- Promoting partnerships to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, particularly Goals 1, 2 and 4 on poverty eradication, zero hunger and quality education.
