Jan Eliasson was elected President of the United Nations General Assembly’s 60th session on 13 June 2005. At the time of his election, he was serving as Sweden’s Ambassador to the United States.
Jan Eliasson presided the General Assembly’s 60th session from 13 September 2005 to 11 September 2006.
Also on 13 June 2005, the General Assembly elected 21 Vice-Presidents 60th session:
- from the African States: Angola, Central African Republic, Guinea-Bissau, Kenya, Mali and Tunisia;
- from the Asian-Pacific States: India, Iran, Malaysia, Myanmar and Pakistan;
- from the Eastern European States: Armenia;
- from the Latin American and Caribbean States: Brazil, Paraguay and Venezuela;
- from the Western European and Other States: Israel;
- the five permanent members of the Security Council: China, France, Russian Federation, United Kingdom and the United States.
Priorities
2005 World Summit Follow-up
Immediately following the opening, Heads of State and Government gathered for a three-day High-level Plenary Meeting, also referred to as the 2005 World Summit, from 14 to 16 September. They took decisions on a range of significant proposals in the areas of development, security, human rights and strengthening of the United Nations, and also reviewed progress towards fulfilling their commitments under the Millennium Declaration, which was adopted by world leaders at the Millennium Summit of 2000 (resolution 55/2). These pledges included internationally agreed development goals and the global partnership required for their achievement.
The sixtieth session as a whole also concentrated on the follow-up to the World Summit, in addition to its regular agenda. Among the main areas to be discussed were:
