Champions Network FAQs
The Champions Network is a diverse global network of individuals and leaders who are passionate about making food systems more sustainable and just. Members of the network will actively call for a fundamental transformation of the world’s food systems to drive progress toward all 17 SDGs.
In September 2020, an initial group of Champions were brought together by the UN Food Systems Summit Special Envoy and the Summit Secretariat to jump-start and lead the Champions Network. Nominated by the Summit Secretariat or existing Champions, these members commit to mobilizing their own networks to support the Summit. They support the Vision and Principles of Engagement and agree to mobilize their networks, to share information, to host and take part in official events or Dialogues, and bring forward commitments and actions for the Summit.
All Champions will be people from the public sector, civil society, the private sector, research communities, indigenous groups, farmer organizations, and beyond whose actions will have transformative impacts on food systems locally to globally for the better.
To fill the Champions roles, the Summit’s leadership – including the Secretariat, Scientific group, Advisory group and Action Track leaders – sought out individuals with a proven record of advancing food systems transformation and thought leadership to constitute the first set of Champions. The Summit leadership is committed to developing a Network that is inclusive and representative of the constituencies across the food system and all regions of the world. It will thus grow and expand over time. The current list of the Champions is available here.
The Champions Network will grow and expand over time. The Network’s overall goal is to build a committed group of Champions to help deliver on the 2030 Agenda leading up to and beyond the Summit. Champions are either appointed by the Special Envoy or nominated through the Champions Network Leadership Team who will review of nominations and provide recommendations to the Secretariat for decision by the Special Envoy.
