  The UN Operation in Côte d'Ivoire (UNOCI) organized an Open House Day event at the mission headquarters in Pergola Hotel. The event included a photographic exhibition and the projection of documentaries on UNOCI and UN peacekeeping in general. The Open House was attended by representatives of NGOs and humanitarian agencies and organizations, teachers, school students and media. Democratic Republic of the Congo

 

  The United Nations Organization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUC) organized on 27 May a series of activities at its headquarters in Kinshasa and 12 other mission sectors. In Kinshasa, MONUC conducted a guided tour and presentation of the MONUC Kinshasa logistic base for visitors, which included representatives of Congolese press, university students, children from elementary and secondary school, representatives of UN agencies, Congolese civilian and military authorities, and national and international NGOs. It also organized a visit to the Uruguayan contingent base. The “Open House” activities in the afternoon included an exhibit depicting the work of MONUC military and civilian peacekeepers through the display of documents, brochures and photos. During the event, a number of video programmes produced by the MONUC Video Unit were also screened. Similar activities were organized by the MONUC public information office in a number of other locations, including in Beni and Goma.--- Photo
       
 

Georgia



  The UN Observer Mission in Georgia (UNOMIG) organized a number of events throughout May, including the launch of the photo exhibit and a pre-screening of a documentary on UNOMIG at the mission headquarters in Tbilisi; military parade and medal ceremony in Sukhumi; and a medal ceremony for the civilian police officers in Zugdidi. UNOMIG's Public Information Office held advance meeting with journalists to provide them with background information on the observances and UN peacekeeping in general. India-Pakistan

  The UN Military Observer Mission in India and Pakistan (UNMOGIP) marked the occasion on 29 May with a ceremony in its current Main Headquarter in Srinagar . The proceedings, which also included a wreath-laying ceremony, were presided by the Chief Military Observer. Other small ceremonies were also held in the 11 field stations along the Line of Control and at UNMOGIP Liaison Office in Delhi .--- More
       
 

Kosovo , Serbia and Montenegro



  The UN Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) translated into Albanian and Serbian and disseminated the press release and the Secretary General's message issued on the occasion of the Day. Kosovo's Prime Minister issued a statement thanking the UN peacekeepers for their work in support of peace, democracy and stability.
       
 

Lebanon



  The UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) marked the Day by organizing a special observance at UNIFIL's headquarters in Naqoura, including a photo exhibition. In addition to the UN personnel, the gathering was attended by government representatives, senior officers of the Lebanese Army, local communities and media. Eight Lebanese daily newspapers and five TV stations covered the UNIFIL events. Liberia



  The UN Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) commemorated the Day on 28 May by organizing a series of events including a military parade and flag-raising ceremony at the mission's headquarters in Monrovia . The UNMIL Officer-in-Charge and Liberian Deputy Foreign Minister addressed the gathering attended by senior government officials, the diplomatic corps, the UN country team and UNMIL military and civilian personnel. Over 20 local journalists covered the event while UNMIL Radio provided live coverage. UNMIL Radio also aired several special programmes throughout the day. In addition, UNMIL public information officers, in cooperation with other components, organized a number of activities in various mission sectors throughout the country, including parades and sporting events. --- More
       
 

Middle East



  In the morning of 27 May, the Chief of Staff of the UN Truce Supervision Organization of Mission (UNTSO) addressed the mission personnel on the occasion of the Day and read out the message of the Secretary-General. In the evening, UNTSO's Senior Advisor made a presentation on peacekeeping at Herzlya University in Tel Aviv. About 200 students and some members of faculty attended the presentation.
       
 

Sierra Leone



  The UN Mission in Sierra Leone (UNAMSIL) organized a joint medal parade for Force headquarters staff officers and United Nations military observers, which was held on 27 May at the Car Park of the UNAMSIL headquarters in Freetown . The Special Representative of the Secretary-General addressed the medal parade and then read out the Secretary-General's statement, followed by H.E. the President of the Republic of Sierra Leone, who spoke to the gathering in praise of UNAMSIL and its achievement in support of peace and stability in the country. Tajikistan



  United Nations Tajikistan Office of Peacebuilding (UNTOP) arranged for a wreath laying ceremony at the commemorating plate of the five peacekeepers of the UN Observers Mission in Tajikistan (UNMOT) killed in Tajikistan in 1995 and 1998. The event was covered by the local media.
       
 

Western Sahara



  The UN Mission for the Referendum in Western Sahara (MINURSO) Force Commander presided over a memorial ceremony attended by mission military, civilian police, international and local civilian personnel. MINURSO also prepared a series of wall charts and posters for display and distribution.
