Exhibit at UN Headquarters will highlight role language staff of DGACM play in facilitating dialogue between Member States

The Department for General Assembly and Conference Management (DGACM) is organizing an exhibit to coincide with the International Year of Languages.  The exhibit will begin October 2008, and will highlight the important role DGACM staff, particularly in the language units, play in facilitating dialogue and cooperation among Member States, through their work in interpretation, translation, and documentation, in all of the UN’s six official languages.

The exhibit will be in the South Gallery of the Visitors’ Lobby at UN Headquarters in New York from early October to early November.  It will provide an overview of DGACM activities, and showcase the journey of a document as it makes its way to publication from its earliest stages.  There will also be items of historical interest on display which are no longer used at the UN.

The exhibit will feature a mock-up of an interpreter’s booth which will allow visitors to hear recordings of interpretation. It will also include the screening of two videos: “Interpreters: historical perspectives” and a video on the creation of a document.
