OTHER EVENT: DIALOGUE WITH THE EXECUTIVE SECRETARIES OF THE REGIONAL COMMISSIONS

In ECOSOC decision 2004/323 on regional cooperation, the Council decided to hold a dialogue with the Executive Secretaries of the regional commissions immediately after the High-level Segment of its Substantive Session. In its decision 2007/203 on working arrangements for the Substantive Session of 2007, the Council decided that the dialogue would be held on Friday, 6 July 2007.

The interactive dialogue, on the theme: “Regional aspects of the themes of the High-level Segment of the Economic and Social Council's 2007 substantive session”, considered from a regional perspective the theme for the thematic discussion, “Strengthening efforts at all levels to promote pro-poor sustained economic growth, including through equitable macroeconomic policies” and the theme for the Annual Ministerial Review, “Strengthening efforts to eradicate poverty and hunger, including through the global partnership for development”.

In addition, on Wednesday, 4 July, from 11 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.,  the Regional Commissions organized an interactive panel discussion on regional roadmaps towards achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) presenting region-specific perspectives. The event was enriched by the contribution of an additional high-level representative from a major stakeholder of each of the regions. The interactive discussions encouraged delegations to exchange views on regional MDG initiatives, further defining their modalities and scope; identified ways to maximize the impact of such regional efforts on national development strategies; and exchanged best practices in each of the regions towards the achievement of the MDGs.
