Twelfth Coordination Meeting on International Migration
New York, 20-21 February 2014

International migration is a global phenomenon that is growing in scope, complexity and impact. Today, virtually all countries in the world are simultaneously countries of destination, origin and transit for international migrants. Traditional migration patterns are complemented by new migratory flows, fuelled by changing economic, demographic, political and social conditions. Changing migration patterns affect the size and composition of migrant populations as well as economies and societies in countries of origin and destination.

The rise in global mobility, the growing complexity of migratory patterns and the impact of such movements on development have all contributed to international migration becoming a priority for the international community.

The twelfth Coordination Meeting on International Migration focused on the follow-up to the 2013 High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development as well as integrating international migration into the post-2015 United Nation development agenda. The twelfth Coordination Meeting on International Migration took place in New York from 20 to 21 February 2014.

Objectives of the meeting

Print

The Population Division of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations is organizing the twelfth annual Coordination Meeting on International Migration. The meeting is being held in response to General Assembly resolution 58/208 of 13 February 2004, which requests the Secretary-General to continue convening meetings to coordinate international migration activities.

The twelfth coordination meeting on international migration has two main objectives. First, the meeting will focus on activities to follow-up on and, where relevant, implement the Declaration of the 2013 High-level Dialogue on International Migration and Development (A/RES/68/4) as well as the eight-point agenda for action of the Secretary-General presented in his report to the 2013 High-level Dialogue (A/68/190). Second, the meeting will consider how migration can be integrated into the implementation framework of the post-2015 United Nations development agenda.

By bringing together entities of the United Nations system, other relevant intergovernmental organizations and civil society as well as interested Member States, the coordination meeting provides a unique opportunity to strengthen collaboration and coordination within the United Nations system as well as with other relevant intergovernmental organizations to fully address the issue of international migration and development.

The deliberations and outcomes of the meeting will contribute to the report of the Secretary-General on international migration and development, which will be prepared for the sixty-ninth session of the General Assembly.
