DPAD,in close collaboration with UNDP's Office in Honduras and the Government of Honduras, held the first intensive practical training workshop on "Strengthening Macroeconomic and Social Policy Coherence through Integrated Macro-Micro Modeling". This was a follow up to an inception workshop on July 2012 and working meetings in December 2012.

The workshop was attended by a group of government technical officials representing the Central Bank, the National Institute of Statistics, various Secretariats (Finance, Planning, Education, Health, Agriculture, Social Development, and Office of the President) and UNDP representatives.

The goals of the workshop and the project are to strengthen the analytical capabilities of government staff in order for them to more autonomously: a) evaluate the impact of global external shocks on national development, specifically in terms of meeting the MDGs; b) formulate strategies to mitigate and compensate the adverse effects of the said shocks; and c) be better able to anticipate and prepare for crises events, to avoid setback on the path to human development.

During the workshop DPAD:

  • reviewed the main functions of the MAMS model;
  • presented the state of the MAMS dataset for Honduras and agreed on steps to complete it;
  • described the file structure of MAMS and its use;
  • described the ISIM-MAMS Excel-based interface, how it is installed and how it is used to run MAMS scenarios;
  • Provided practical examples and exercises of external-shocks and policy simulations to analyze their impact on the Honduran economy.

This training workshop is the latest in a series of training events under the project "Strengthening Macroeconomic and Social Policy Coherence through Integrated Macro-Micro Modeling", conducted by DPAD, in close collaboration with UNDP's Office in Honduras and the Government of Honduras. An introduction to the modeling tools and techniques was held in Tegucigalpa on 10-13 July, 2012, and a workshop and working meetings were held on December 2012.

The goals of the project are to strengthen the analytical capabilities of government staff in order for them to more autonomously: a) evaluate the impact of global external shocks on national development, specifically in terms of meeting the MDGs; b) formulate strategies to mitigate and compensate the adverse effects of said shocks; and c) be better able to anticipate and prepare for crises and avoid setbacks on the path to human development.
