Opening remarks at SDG Business Forum

Excellencies,Business Leaders,Distinguished Colleagues,Ladies and gentlemen,

I am pleased to welcome all participants at this third SDG Business Forum. The UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, UNDESA, is one of the co-organizers of this event, and we are grateful to our partners at the International Chamber of Commerce and the UN Global Compact for their continued support and leadership.

The fact that so many CEOs are joining us today is a clear signal that the business sector has embraced its share of responsibility in supporting the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals. In this third year of implementation of the 2030 Agenda, it is time to review solutions and discuss how to scale up innovative approaches promoted by the business and industry.

Distinguished participants,

I urge you to take this opportunity to consolidate, renew and reinforce your commitment towards the Sustainable Development Goals, our global roadmap for ensuring a healthy planet and leaving no one behind. The ambition of the SDGs demands that all sectors of society, including business and industry, are actively engaged in their implementation.

As business leaders, you are at the frontline of innovation. You know that sustainable solutions are critical for businesses to thrive in the longer-term.

Indeed, you are catalysts of change.

Today you will share good examples of how the SDGs are being connected with business strategies and actions.

You will discuss how to unlock the power of businesses as a ‘force for good’, and how to build effective multi-stakeholder platforms at the country level to help drive solutions to complex challenges.

You will review how leading businesses are responding to the challenge of sustainability and what it means to be a ‘responsible business’ in the age of the SDGs.

You will also examine innovative and leading solutions for the SDGs that are under review during this HLPF, and how businesses are integrating the SDGs as a framework for future growth. In particular, I would like to encourage you to look at SDG 12, sustainable consumption and production.

Distinguished colleagues,

Setting up business models that decrease inequalities, minimize vulnerabilities and embrace diversity is not only a moral obligation, but a smart business strategy. I hope you will integrate this into your discussions today.

Ultimately, investing in the SDGs and engaging in their implementation will support growth and job creation, everywhere. I am sure that this Forum will showcase action and bring new ideas for multi-stakeholder engagements that can advance the implementation of the 2030 Agenda. DESA will continue to work with the International Chamber of Commerce and the UN Global Compact to ensure the SDG Business Forum makes its contribution to the achievement of the 2030 Agenda in the coming decade.

I wish you all a successful event.

Thank you.
