Opening Remarks Climate Action Summit 2019 – Energy Transition Track Energy Fueling People: Clean cooking, energy and health

Excellencies,Distinguished Participants,Ladies and Gentlemen,

I am very pleased to join you all at this important Energy Transition Track of the Climate Action Summit.

I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Minister Seleshi Bekele of Ethiopia, Minister Rasmus Prehn of Denmark, and SRSG Rachel Kyte, for their joint leadership to make this event happen.

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Transforming energy pathways is central to delivering on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Paris Agreement on climate

change. This point is also emphasized in the recently published Global Sustainable Development Report.

At the heart of such energy transformations must be people. In this 21st century, we simply cannot leave 800 million people in darkness without access to electricity. We cannot leave 3 billion people without clean cooking facilities.

We must end energy poverty, now.

Achieving SDG 7 will spur progress, not only on climate action, but across many other goals and targets—such as poverty eradication, gender equality, health, education, decent jobs, innovation and transport.

Distinguished Participants,

We at DESA are fully committed to making SDG 7 a reality. I will emphasize this in the following five points.

First, to address the electricity access gap, we are committed to supporting the Sustainable Energy Access Coalition under the leadership of Ethiopia, Morocco, Malawi and Palau.

Second, to address the clean cooking access gap, we are proud to partner with WHO, UNDP and the World Bank in the creation of the Health and Energy Platform of Action. We warmly welcome the Clean Cooking Fund established by the World Bank. And we intend to provide strong support for the proposed High-Level Coalition of Leaders for Clean Cooking, Energy and Health.

Third, to strengthening coordination and collaboration across the UN system, we will reinforce the secretariat for UN-Energy, building on the UN-Energy Action Plan.

Fourth, to facilitate international cooperation, we will strengthen support for global dialogues on energy at the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development and other relevant gatherings. We will continue to invest in the SDG 7 Technical Advisory Group, and work with the SDG7 indicator custodians to inform decision making processes. We will leverage the UN Decade on Sustainable Energy for All 2014 to 2024, as well as global conferences on sustainable transport and the ocean next year, to catalyze further action.

Finally, we will continue to promote the synergies between climate action and the broader 2030 Agenda to scale up ambition and commitment in implementation.

Thank you again and I look forward to a fruitful discussion.
