Target insight: Promoting ATT ratification and PoA Implementation in the Asia-Pacific through building capacity and best practices

Target countries: Southeast Asia

Goal: To encourage increased awareness of the importance and the benefits of joining the ATT in the Asia and Pacific region where ratification and accession to the ATT lags behind in comparison to other regions of the world.

 

Activities and Outputs:

  • Three workshops including a sub-regional workshop for Southeast Asian states, an intra-regional forum for discussion and a national workshop in Bangladesh provided an avenue for exchanging views and sharing experiences in preparing for the future implementations of the ATT. These workshops also fostered cooperation among States and provided expertise on the implementation of provisions of the PoA and the ATT.

  • Through the workshops as well as various meetings, the Maldives and the Philippines specifically, have received tailored technical and legal reviews and recommendations on further strengthening their national capacities to implement the UN Programme of Action (PoA) on small arms and light weapons (SALW) and Bangladesh was provided expertise on the implementation of provisions of the PoA and the ATT through the organization of a national workshop.
