Building a comprehensive arms control system in the Pacific through strengthened implementation of international arms control standards

Target countries: Pacific countries, in particular Melanesian States: Fiji, Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu

Goal: Reduced vulnerability of the Pacific to illicit arms and armed violence through the adoption of strong international standards for arms control across the region.

Activities: Development of an interagency guide on the ATT and PoA for transit and transhipment in the Pacific region. The project will organise a sub-regional workshop on the ATT/PoA with four Melanesian Pacific States to review regional arms control and develop strategies for strengthend inclusion of international standards on arms control in regional frameworks and to share national best practices. In addition, national interagency workshops will be held to build strategies for increased coordination between agencies which includes streamlining processes in preparation for the PoA Review Conference in 2018.
