Expanding the web: resourcing the adoption and use of standardised illicit SALW inventory and tracing tools in West Africa

Implementing agency: Conflict Armament Research (CAR)

Project timeframe: 01/01/2019 – 31/12/2019

Target countries: ECOWAS sub-region: Nigeria and Niger

Goal: Aim to expand regional use of simple tools and procedures for documenting and tracing SALW, developed and field-tested in the past year in West Africa.

Activities:

1) The project will ensure that all ECOWAS Member States have simple, practical tools for SALW documentation and tracing.

2) Tracing focal points already established in Abuja and Niamey will receive SALW data from all parts of the country during 2019: currently a key practical obstacle to fulfilling their existing mandates. This will permit them to make comprehensive SDG 16.4.2 reports.

3) Expanded SALW tracing should help evidence-based targeting of national and donor resources for future SALW action, from border security to PSSM, in Nigeria and Niger.
