Target countries: CARICOM states: Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, Trinidad and Tobago.
Goal: To provide training for national points of contact on the ATT and UNPoA and other related Arms Control Instruments and to develop the capacity of CARICOM Member States to strengthen their response to the illegal trafficking of firearms by improving the capacity and awareness of small arms control instruments.
Activities:
- A training programme on internatrional, multilateral and regional arms control instruments, monitoring tools, and roles and functions of national points of contact was initiated and completed in collaboration with partner agencies such as the Small Arms Survey, United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) and Stimson Center.
- Two five-day training workshops for national points of contact on arms control instruments including the ATT and UNPoA saw 46 individuals gain knowledge of SALW technical tools. Specifically, participants were trained in five key categories that sought to enhance the national points of contact’s understanding and knowledge base on effective arms control, and the instruments that support CARICOM priorities on weapon trafficking; improve their capacity to coordinate national activities in addressing international obligations; advance design, monitoring and evaluation frameworks on the impact of conventional arms; and share best practices among Member States.
- It is expected that the outputs and recommendations from the workshops will lead to significant improvements regarding adhering to and reporting on the ATT, UNPoA and other related arms control instruments in the region.
