Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

The Time I killed Millions of Innocent People

As I dropped from the bomber
I watched the panicked faces
they would no longer
see the beautiful places

There were screams and chaos
people running everywhere
it reminded me of the time in Laos
what happened now has been a dare

The closer i got the more people screamed
as the air got stronger
i never would have dreamed
this much of me ponder

The people around me
brought back my whole fate
i felt as if he
the bomber that had dropped me would never want to wait

I hit the ground
as I exploded and bombed all over
The bomber that had dropped me is probably proud
Though this is not how i feel i wish i had a four leaf clover

The people dying and some surviving
made me as you might imagine guilty
i heard the ambulances arriving
thinking of myself as greatly filthy
