The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.
Below is one of the contest entries.
Letters to the Departed How peaceful and calm they float, Those mini lantern boats. Filled with letters from the hearts To those who had departed. A terrifying objected suddenly lands And a hateful boom resounds. Flames and sparks come after, And the citizens run faster. Like a scattered rainbow Oh, how calmly they flow, Each representing the souls That have been lost long ago. The absolutely frightened minds Runs to the safest place they find. Plunge! Into the boiling lake Before realizing their mistake. Lifeless limps remain afloat No longer can cry, flee nor hope. Entering the realm of the departed Those departed. Like the makers of the lanterns... What can you do? Let your ideas run. May the floating letters from the hearts Reach those who had departed.
