The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.
Below is one of the contest entries.
The Sea of Fire As people worked, laughed, and played, they didn’t know what was approaching: The sea of fire... Picking flowers with their small, delicate hands, children didn’t ponder the thought of danger to come: The sea of fire... Agonizing cries, moans of pain, they needed a way to flee The sea of fire... As destruction filled the air, overpowering peacefulness, no one could evade The sea of fire... The sea of fire, the sea of fire burned flowers that once brought peace and love, crushed hopeful hearts, buried desired dream, and annihilated the childish, loveable smiles. The sea of fire... Stop the wars! Stop the battles! Stop the nuclear destruction! For the sake of peace and humanity... Stop the sea of fire!
