The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.
Below is one of the contest entries.
Turn To Hope They need help, their faces begging us.. Telling us how bad it's hurting.. telling us how hard it is to survive out there. Different people, from different families all different kind, but one same kind of suffering. Lost families, lost friends.. Dead families, dead friends.. Everyone so debilitated; petrified, so unprotected.. not knowing what's going to happen next. Scared of their future; terrified to lose the ones that they love; the ones that they treasure. Children wandering around, lost, broken and wounded. Wondering where their mommy is, Wondering where their daddy is. The ones who were always there, the ones whom they always cared. The ones who always stood beside them, the ones who always made the feel safe, Are now missing; nowhere to be found. Children feeling helpless, not seeing any light ahead. Mothers running round, worried where their children are, Anxious if they're dying from hunger, Troubled by the thought that they might be crying, scared and lost. Hearts shattering into pieces inside, frightened that their children might be dead, lost and gone. Everyone's in pain. Troubled, terror-stricken, in need of help. All they're asking for is peace. All they're needing is peace. All they can do is just keep wishing for peace on a shooting star..
