Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Can you imagine a day without sunshine, no rainbows?
being surrounded by a black hole.
But you escape, hearing the happy cheering and joyful things, reaching in, and pulling you out.
What do they really mean?
Innocent lives, losing touch.
But we kept moving on.
We can pray every night for those lives, asking for mercy in the future.
How can we really be sure?
We hold our hands together,
close our eyes,
forming a nation of peace,
and hope.
