Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Nothing is left

The smoke clears, as I crawl away
I see the pain in everyone’s faces
My memory is clear but I can’t help feeling
That I’m missing something, something important
My tears are dry like scars on my face
I see people crying, screaming for help
Fire running everywhere, burning people’s faces
Now that I lost everything, nothing I left
I can’t take the pain, it’s too much
It will be better up there, where there is no pain
I could be happy with my ryoushin
Because without anything nothing is left
