Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Walls have fallen,
boundaries breached.

They are walking all nights
sharing sweat and blood.

They took oath on the quiet river
over the hilltop where sea rushes in,
they burned their hands on fire.
They have killed their past,
addressed and religion.

It's dawn.
No bombs are going to fall,
no planes and demons.
No women raped, no baby unshaped.

They are humans,
this is the earth they were given.

They must reach life
Before it's too late for us.
