Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

The sun don't rise no more
Like it did on the eastern shore
My brothers are at war
They do no, no peace no more

Papa hoist the white flag
Put the red in bag it's a snug
All this blood, my soul sag
Where is uncle, family is a rug

Wind don't smell fresh
I can sniff it on the mesh
It smells of human flesh
Off my black skins dash

The last leaf has fell
Of the trees fate can't tell
No seeds left on to till
Mama assist I gather kernel

Comrades look in window
See bodies under willow
Come help me billow
I only smell war blow

Help me find stillness
Calm as the pot stillness
Give me a sign of hopefulness
Pass me a cigar smoking quietness

Sing to my tune at the dune
Sing to my song and hymn
Sing to my flute and rhyme
Sing to a song of harmony
