Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

The pursuit of selfishness led to great wars
Is peace that much of a challenge?
Man has wantonly disregarded life he cannot create
His brutality exceeding him, plaguing the virtue of togetherness
History shows that violence has solved no problem
Unborn children murmurs, what are they thinking?
The change we wish to see is us
Proclaiming with not our lips but hearts
Replacing the control of power with love
To settle our differences, for the sake of happiness
Then will we cherish the blessings of peace
Our world is our treasure we must preserve it
No matter our differences we must always accommodate one another
The fullness of life can be achieved, it takes courage
