The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.
Below is one of the contest entries.
I tremble with horror and fright When i remember the horrendous days of wars and fights Families live for days without any diet on sight Tension, grief and sorrow at their highest heights Just because of a few selfish might I hear shouts of pain and agony I see custodians of lives flee for their lives from many I hear sounds of bullets and spills of money But no one cares to have a penny Children race and pace To find a known face But find no solace Fathers barricade families from death's claws But death;no respecter of persons or laws Claps all with its jaws The land,as barren as an eroded pasture Is an epitome of the picture of my perfect future I feel the pierce of fears in my heart It bears the tears of death The tunnel is dark and scary Yet i can sight the ray of a tiny light A light of hopeful promises with delight A promise of a brighter future with smiles A smile that lasts with peace for miles LET THE POWER OF PEACE REIGN AND THE WOES OF WAR DRAIN
