The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.
Below is one of the contest entries.
FREEZE THE TATTERED AND TORE. Nights and days rob the clothes- Yesterdays tore the wears - Everyday calls for tears. Man should freeze the vandal palms; Man should clear the wan faces. Mouths should soothe the rhythmic breaths; Tongues should roll for daily sweet. Eyes of all should smiles for life; drops of joy should beat the tears. White or black or even red should be seen from one angle... THE BROOM As tiny as tailor's tool - needle, and as vulnerable as they are, they withstand the dust and cleanse and boost the living stay with in fact a starving rope - their motto is all-in-one - all-the-time... One tongue - one voice: the call!
