The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.
Below is one of the contest entries.
Last night, Dvorak's New World Symphony - 2nd movement at the Sydney Opera House took me by the hand and led me to something like a clearing framed by boughs burdened by unbearable beauty. You'd be right to guess - joy dawned at the last horn. Last night, I imagined Dvorak endured deep loss to celebrate sweetness so. Today, I see I don't know his history. I recognize mine as it arrives. This I do know - peace is not a point at one extreme of its opposite. It descends into our midst and we breathe it to make it our own.
