Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

When that little white dove

Soars through the deep blue sky,

I finally understand why.

Misfortune resembles peace

Such as Sadako’s tale

Which will never fail.

To reach out and grab our hearts

This girl was brave

Sadako Sasaki was her name.

She was so motivated

To make 1,000 paper cranes.

Sadako was a legend

Sent to heaven

Sadako Sasaki, I will never forget.
