The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.
Below is one of the contest entries.
All I saw was dead bodies and smoke Seeing this all made me want to choke As I remember, it was a beautiful day Now my heart is full of pain and dismay My heart is shattered and my eyes are teary I wasn’t able to find my family I look back at my house, and sob some more Remembering all the memories Sometimes it’s hard to control this heart This all happened just way too fast After all, it was a big blast. All I could see was pitch black I felt like my heart was being attacked I prayed for the safety for all And then I thought to myself War is horrible War takes lives War is not peace War is wrong
