Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

"A Day of Despair"

August 9, 1945:

The day Japan was bombed

Brought destruction and despair

That would last some years long

Children in school

With no idea of what’s going on

Lost and abandoned

With their families gone

People trapped in debris

Some roaming the streets

Looking for shelter

Tripping over corpses’ feet

A sea of fire,

Where a city once used to be

People’s skin scorched and tattered

Moaning in agony

People bewildered

Confused why they were attacked

Just wishing for peace-

Wishing they had their families back

Peace is needed

So this world can progress;

The violence needs to stop

So people can finally rest
