Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Remember the blossoms ?
The ones which were pink at dawn ,
And now as red as my cherry dreams ,
Wet , as the tears that fell ,
From my little sister's eyes ;

Our clothes white when we left home ,
And now we can not even see ,
What colour they bear ,
Or who holds our hands ,
And cleans our wounds ;

I wonder how many stars are out at night ,
Or if they even exist anymore ,
How bright they are if they do ,
Or if they even shine anymore ,
If only I could see ;

How I wish the day had not been ,
When the sky was a reddish grey ,
And we melted throughtout ,
Yes we melted , skin and bone ,
Eyes and hearts all alike ;

The world cries for us now ,
But time is oblivious to tears ,
And the calendar does not mourn with us ,
For a day of it's when all cried ,
Little boys and even Fat men.
