Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Never Forget

Innocent people pulverized to ashes
A generation forever maimed.
Two cities crushed to cinders
Their sweeping structures smoldering.
The giant mushroom cloud rains down
Weeping torrid tears of Japanese despair
Lamenting American regret.
An irreversible mistake
Fueled by the impulse, ignorance, ire
Of mankind
Channeled into a monstrous creation.
The Iron Age at its peak.
We try to shield ourselves
Behind our protective shell of ignorance.
How are humans capable
Of an action so inhumane?
But we must never forget
Lest that August morning repeats itself.
The Monster must enter eternal slumber
And be chained a thousand times over
In the bottomless pits of human consciousness
Never to unleash its terror upon the world again.
