The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.
Below is one of the contest entries.
Unwanted Memories A luminous day filled with a clear blue sky children are learning, mailmen are delivering, and adults are cooking. Abrupt noises are heard and fear is instant within every human being. Instantaneously walking becomes flying and an altered perception is born. One’s eyes reveal darkness and blood in every angle. Confused and petrified of legs, fingers, and flesh taken from every individual. Sister, brothers, mothers, and fathers are nowhere to be found. Screaming for water but no one is in sight, lying there only to put up with a fight.
