Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

I knew the plane I was coming from,
Flied far from near,
I knew all the happiness below,
Would turn to hate and fear

As I dropped slowly to the ground below,
The end was coming near,
I would soon become ground zero,
I was going to hit like a spear,

Down, down, down below,
I still have some time before I blow,
Little did the people know,
They were up for quite a show,

As I reach my target,
blinding lights are glown,
I have yet to realize,
That I’ve already blown

Thousands of people die while shocked,
More painful that being shot,
Whatever’s within a 3 mile radius,
Dies on spot

Millions of people dead,
Billions of people dread,
We will not forget this day
August 6-9, 1945 never replay
