Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

The Atom Bomb

''Why does it have to be me'' I thought to myself.
Why do I have to carry out this dark deed?
I don't want to be responsible for the deaths of thousands.
I don't want to kill all of these innocent people,
but there's no way that I can stop it from happening.
I'm not even a human being;no arms,no legs,not even a head.
All I have is a metal shell and a bunch of nuclear energy inside of me,
itching to explode.
How can I possibly stop this horrific tragedy from happening?
Then,it happened;the hatch opened and I plummeted down to the Earth.
An unanswered question bubbled inside of me:why couldn't we have peace instead of war?
Why all of these deaths when we could just shake hands and be friends?
Then,I smacked down on the solid pavement.
I knew that it not only was the end of my life, but also the lives of many others.
