Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

When will we stop?

When the very earth we know has been tarnished and broken
And when every breath we take brings a pang of fire in our throats
Will we begin to see how much it hurts you and me, him and her?
Or are we going to leave the pain it brings us all unspoken?

Up came the tortuous souls when down came Little Boy
But the ones that are still here have provided a gift that hurts them more
Will they show us how much they suffer or stand by and watch us experience-
The very things they have? Maybe their own decoy

The thunder that hits our ears like lightning
It has awoken us from our slumber
When we realize-
That these games we play are far too frightening

It was all that was needed, just that one drop
That left us waiting, wanting and suffering for a new bloom of life
But no matter what it will leave us wondering the same thing-
When will we stop?
