Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

(πλαγιάζει ο κόσμος σφαιρικός                    (sleeps the world overall
γλυστρά ο λόγος καιρικός                          slips the reason occasional
ακούστηκαν οι λέξεις του                          were heard his words
γουργούρισαν οι ορέξεις του)                      rumbled his appetites)

λάμπει της τρέλας η αυγή                          shines the madness dawn
πνίγει του ήλιου την κραυγή                       drowned the helium scream
θεριών ψυχών ξημέρωμα                             beasts souls sunrise
φλόγες πουλιών στο πτέρωμα                        flames on birds plumage

(με δόντια νύχια σκίσανε                         (teeth n' nails are ripped
τα λάβαρ' αφανίσανε                               the flags are ruined
όντα που κάναν δόμημα                             beings that made building
πόνο και αίμα νόμιμα)                             pain and blood legally)

ζωή ! στο βάθρ' αδιάντροποι                       life ! at the podium shameless
υπάνθρωποι κι απάνθρωποι                          subhuman n' inhuman
σβήσαν λαμπάδες στάξαν κερί                       extinguished candles spilled wax
τούτη την ώρα τη θλιβερή                          this hour the sad hour

πήρ' ένα δάκρυ κόσμημα                            he took a teardrop jewel
παράσημο και τόλμημα                              medal n' deed of daring
βγήκε μ' αυτό καμάρι του                          came up with -his pride
σε βήμα δόξας κι άρρητου                          at podium of glory n' unsaid
