Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Oh you,
you dashing river of my youth,
don't hustle to be wasted
don't crave to dry up.
Years are rolling down on you
like rocks that crush.

And you,
you sleepless beast
that wander round my mind,
don't fake to be tired
don't seek to go to rest.
Run, you fears and destiny
are hunting you like nets.

And — what shall I call you-
bird of heaven in my heart,
don't stop to sing
don't shut your wings.
Look deeper to burrow or fly higher.
