Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

What is peace?

What is peace?
Is peace on paper or in the heart?
Is peace material or immaterial?
I do not see peace anywhere near me.

It was six years and ten months a-went
when the people of South Sudan
at the glare of IGAD and UN and the world
signed the Comprehensive peace Agreement
into a peace deal. We wore birds feathers
 and danced ourselves to bed.

The object was peace and prosperity for all.
but why, why can't I find peace in this abode?
is it because am still in rags
and those who wore rags with me are influential now?
why, why can't I find peace?
