Paper Cranes

Poetry for Peace Contest

The Poetry for Peace contest was held from 15 September until 14 October 2011. The winners were anounced at a ceremony at UN headquarters in New York.

Below is one of the contest entries.

Could You Imagine?

Could you imagine?
The sound of a bomb as it goes off,
The smoke in your eyes, the oncoming cough,
The thought of not seeing your family again,
Your heart racing every now and then.
Could you imagine?
Your whole city upside down,
All you would do is wear a frown.
What would you do? Would you run away?
Would you start something new? Start a new day?
Could you imagine?
Could you put yourself in their shoes?
Or stand back and hear the news?
Could you cry and feel the pain
Or will the memories drive you insane?
