Disarmament in Review
3 October 2012 — The United Nations Institute for Training and Research (UNITAR) along with the Permanent Missions of Egypt and Indonesia organized a Special Briefing on the work of the First Committee of the General Assembly: the main committee responsible for disarmament and international security.
The introduction to the briefing was provided by Ms. Yvonne Lodico, Head of the UNITAR New York Office, which was followed by welcoming remarks from H.E. Mr. Mootaz Khalil, Permanent Representative of Egypt to the United Nations.

High Representative for Disarmament Affairs, and H.E. Mr. Desra Percaya, Permanent Representative of Indonesia to the United Nations, Chairperson of the First Committee.
The full day’s programme dealt with many of the essential issues that the First Committee will tackle when the 67th Session opens on 8 October 2012 including nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction, issues related to conventional weapons, transparency and confidence-building measures in outer space, cyber-technology in the context of international security, and the role of civil society in disarmament and non-proliferation.
Sessions were moderated individually by Ms. Jaqueline Miller, Senior Associate, Strategic Trust-Building Initiative of the EastWest Institute and Dr. W. Pal Sidhu, Senior Fellow, Center on International Cooperation at New York University.
A specific session was held on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference Process for the cycle which began in 2011 and culminates in 2015 when the Review Conference will be held. It was moderated by Mr. Amr Aljowaily, Counsellor, Permanent Mission of Egypt to the United Nations.
Presentations were made by staff from the United Nations Office for Disarmament Affairs, members of academia and representatives from various disarmament non-governmental organizations, which were followed by Q & A in panel discussion format on specific topics related to disarmament, non-proliferation and arms control.
