Mr. Eliott Harris Assistant Secretary-General for Economic Development and Chief Economist

Welcome Remarks
Inaugural Meeting
Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions Network

Distinguished Participants,

It is a real pleasure for me to welcome you to this special occasion of the inaugural meeting of the “Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions Network”.

Let me start by thanking Mr. Richard Taylor (IHA) and his team for hosting today’s meeting, as well as ITAIPU for their joint efforts with UN DESA to launch this Global Network.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is about realizing great opportunities for billions of people, especially those who are being left behind, and about reaching prosperity everywhere and for everyone.

The 17 SDGs are about eliminating poverty, creating decent jobs, providing quality healthcare and education, protecting the environment and combating climate change.

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development includes explicit Goals on water (Goal 6) and on energy (Goal 7), two critical factors for sustainable development.

It is becoming more evident that there is an urgent need to address these issues in a comprehensive manner.

Today, 1 billion people are having no access to electricity, and 2.8 billion are living in areas of high-water stress.

The global demand for water and energy is projected to increase significantly over the coming decades, with energy consumption to grow by 35% and water demand by 55%.

Without integrated sustainable water and energy programmes and systems, many of our objectives – such as poverty eradication, climate change and sustainable development – cannot be realized.

The Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions Network represents a unique opportunity to promote water and energy sustainability and other SDGs in support of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The Network will provide a platform for all stakeholders to enhance capacities and signal their high-level commitment to the integrated approach to SDG 6 and SDG 7 in support of the SDGs achievement.

To achieve its mission, the Sustainable Water and Energy Solutions Network will need to partner with a wide range of multi-stakeholders with demonstrated experience in managing water-energy interlinkages for sustainable development.

We are honoured you have decided to join the Network as the first partners and share your experience in managing water-energy interlinkages for sustainable development.

Your commitment will directly support the activities of the Network on a voluntary basis, and help leverage skills, expertise and other resources that will support and advance its mission.

Together we will be able to work towards the vision of a world where there is an equitable and sustainable use and management of water and energy resources for all, in support of human well-being, ecosystem integrity and a robust, inclusive economy, under the umbrella of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

We look forward to a very fruitful and successful cooperation.

Thank you.
