The 2012 Commemoration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty (IDEP) will be held on Wednesday, 17 October at United Nations Headquarters in New York, focusing on the theme “Ending the Violence of Extreme Poverty: Promoting Empowerment and Building Peace”.

This year’s event is organized in partnership with the International Movement ATD Fourth World, the NGO Sub-committee for the Eradication of Poverty and the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, supported by the Missions of France and Burkina Faso to the United Nations.

In 2000, world leaders agreed on a set of eight time-bound targets, known as the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), to fight poverty and disease. For over a decade, the MDGs have helped millions to improve their lives, showing that beating poverty is possible.
