International Day for the Eradication of Poverty 2006

Secretary-General With Participants in International Day for Eradication of Poverty Event The theme for the International day for poverty eradication in 2006 is “Working Together out of Poverty “. The fourteenth observance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty will be held on Tuesday, 17 October, and is sponsored jointly by the ATD Fourth World Movement, the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA), the Department of Public Information (DPI) and the NGO Sub-Committee for the Eradication of Poverty.

Since its creation, October 17th has been a day for those living in extreme poverty to speak out and for all citizens to consider how they can contribute to the eradication of extreme poverty. The Day seeks to promote increased awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and serves to remind all people that sustained and concerted effort is vital to achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) of halving the number of people living in poverty by 2015.
