Mortality

Reducing mortality, increasing life expectancy, and improving the health of populations are key objectives contained in the Programme of Action of the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development and in the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Sustainable Development Goals. The Population Division produces estimates and projections of mortality rates by age and of life expectancy at birth for global, regional and national populations. It collaborates with other entities of the United Nations system to harmonize estimates with a view to promoting common messaging and information. The Division also produces reviews and analytical studies of mortality patterns and trends on a regular basis. The Population Division is a member of the United Nations Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME).
