In light of the evolving COVID-19 situation, and taking into account the latest guidance from the United Nations Secretary-General and the World Health Organization (WHO), the Forum Session will take place in a hybrid format with mostly virtual (online) meetings.
In-person meetings at UN Headquarters in New York will only take place at the opening and closing meetings, with limited in-person participation of Forum members and Member States. All other attendees will participate via an online platform. Participation of indigenous peoples’ organizations and civil society will not be possible in-person and will take place only online.
Please note that with this year’s Permanent Forum being held in a virtual format, you will be able to view the sessions live via UN WebTV. Interpretation in all six official UN languages will be available. Both the opening session on Monday, 19 April and closing session on Friday, 30 April will take place in the afternoon (3-5 pm New York time) while all other sessions (20-29 April) will take place in the morning (9-11 am New York time).

International Expert Group Meeting on Indigenous Peoples and Pandemics, 7-11 December 2020
The Indigenous Peoples in Development Branch within the Division of Inclusive Social Development of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs organized the international expert group meeting on a theme “Indigenous Peoples and Pandemics” recommended by the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues and endorsed by the Economic and Social Council.

Virtual regional dialogues
The 2020 session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues was postponed due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The United Nations Economic and Social Council decided that the 20th session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues would take place from 19 to 30 April 2021 at the UN Headquarters in New York. The special theme of the session will be: “Peace, justice and strong institutions: the role of indigenous peoples in implementing Sustainable Development Goal 16”.
In preparation for the 2021 session, the Permanent Forum will organize a series of regional dialogues for an in-depth consideration of the situation of indigenous peoples in each of the seven socio-cultural regions of the world.
The overarching goal of the regional dialogues is to contribute to policy development and decision making that affects indigenous peoples and promotes the implementation of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.

All substantive meetings of the 2021 session of the Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues will be held in virtual/online format. How will the Permanent Forum operate in 2021?
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2021 session of the Permanent Forum is scheduled to take place virtually/online with the exception of two “hybrid“ meetings (opening and closing ) that will take place with limited in–person participation of New York-based delegates and some Forum Members. Everyone else will participate online. This format takes into account the constraints and opportunities in the changing and evolving environment of the COVID-19 pandemic and the related safety and health guidelines implemented at the United Nations Headquarters.
There is no expectation of travel to UNHQ in New York. All side events will take place online/virtually.
Dates and times
Opening and Closing meetings: 19 and 30 April from 3 pm to 5pm.
Virtual informal meetings: 20, 21, 22, 23, 27 and 28 April from 9 am to 11 am.
My organization is interested in attending the next session of the Permanent Forum. Can we participate?
Participation in Permanent Forum sessions is open to indigenous peoples’ organizations, NGOs in consultative status with ECOSOC and academic institutions.
Organizations that have not participated in previous sessions need to create a profile in the integrated Civil Society Organizations (iCSO) System to seek accreditation. Accreditation for new organizations is open prior to general pre-registration for individual participants. All participants need to pre-register for the sessions of the Permanent Forum in the INDICO system. Deadline for on-line registration for 2021 session for new indigenous peoples’ organizations and academia was 22 March 2021. All relevant information about registration is posted on this website for each annual session.
My organization attended previous sessions of the Forum. Do we still need to pre-register?
Yes. All accredited organizations interested in attending the next session of the Forum are invited to register online to be provided access to participate in the virtual session. Indigenous peoples’ organizations must designate up to two Conference Focal Points, who will review the individual registrations of members of their organization that use the platform. Please find the instructions on the participation guide.

My organization has consultative status with ECOSOC, but we have not received a confirmation letter to attend sessions of the Permanent Forum. How can we pre-register?
All participants, including those from organizations enjoying consultative status with ECOSOC must register online to attend the session of the Forum. The NGO in consultative status must designate up to two Conference Focal Points, who will review the individual registrations of members of their organization that use the platform. For panel discussions, invited speakers including members of the Forum will present studies from the 2020 and 2021 sessions of the Forum and refer to the agenda item.
