The fifty-sixth session of the Commission for Social Development (CSocD56) will take place in Conference Room 4 at the United Nations Headquarters in New York from 29 January to 7 February 2018. The Commission is the advisory body responsible for the social development pillar of global development.
This year will be the policy session of the Commission, with the priority theme of “Strategies for eradicating poverty to achieve sustainable development for all.”
The President of the General Assembly (GA), President of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC), UN Secretary-General, Under-Secretary-General for UNDESA, Civil Society Representative and Youth Representative are expected to address the Commission during the opening session on 29 January 2018.
This year, the Civil Society Forum will take place on 2 February 2018 under the theme “Social Protection, Including Floors”. The ECOSOC Youth Forum will also take place from 30 to 31 January 2018 on “The role of youth in building sustainable and resilient urban and rural communities”.
The CSocD56 will host four High-level panel discussions on the following:
- Strategies for eradicating poverty to achieve sustainable development for all
- Towards sustainable and resilient societies: Innovation and inter-connectivity for social development
- Third review and appraisal of the Madrid International Plan of Action on Ageing
- Towards inclusive, resilient and sustainable development: an evidence-based approach to the mainstreaming of disability in the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Agenda 2030
UNDESA DSPD held an informal briefing on the draft programme of work of the CSocD56. The briefing took place on 13 December 2017, 4 p.m. in Conference Room 1 at UN Headquarters in New York. It was convened by the Chair-designate of the Commission (Mr. Nikulás Hannigan, Iceland).
